Grenade Carb Killa White Chocolate

When these bars first launched, the Twitter-sphere and social media feeds were awash with sponsored athletes gorging themselves on box after box and waxing lyrical about how great they tasted. I must admit that I was sceptical and assumed that, as sponsored athletes, these guys and girls were obliged to promote these bars to death to create buzz and interest around the launch. Because of this, and also due to the relatively high price per bar when bought individually in a high-street shop, I stayed away from them.

Mistake. Big mistake.

My first experience with the Grenade Carb Killa bars was with the White Chocolate flavour, and it was the highlight of my day. Literally.

The 60g bar contains only 215 calories, which puts it firmly in the middle of the low-calorie protein bar market, but it has over 22g of protein, which sees it rising to the top of this group.

With a paltry 8.1g of fat and 15.2 g of carbs it can also be labeled as a true low-fat, low-carb protein bar. Its sugar content is also extraordinarily low, at only 2g, which does mean its sweetness is made up from a high amount of sugar alcohols and some artificial sweeteners.

With it’s low calorie content, this bar is great for anyone trying to restrict calories, especially if the goal is to maintain lean muscle mass (the fantastic protein content makes sure of that), or anyone who wants to add a good dose of protein in between meals while satisfying a sweet craving.

Frankly, I’m stunned that Grenade have managed to create a bar that tastes this good with a macronutrient profile to match (fairly low carb, very low sugar, low calories, high protein). On first bite, it tasts just like a chocolate bar. Then, as one bite becomes two, and then three, the taste actually improves – possibly as there’s no trace of the guilt that normally accompanies something this good in the mouth.

The texture is as good as any bar I’ve tasted, without the chewy toughness of normal high-protein bars, or the crumbly, break-apart-in-layers, nature of other low-carb alternatives.

Although the price per bar is quite high, especially when bought individually in a high-street shop, it really becomes on a par with, or even lower than, other premium protein products when bought in bulk. And you don’t begrudge paying for a bar that tastes as good as these do.
